Sacred Traditions:

Monastic Wines It comes to no surprise the monks naturally used preexisting ancient greek and roman vineyards as they established monasteries more than 800 years ago. Wine was needed for mass and the intense physical activity needed for vine growing fit perfectly with their life style and with their spiritual commitment to improving themselves and the fruit of their labor. Cistercian monks achieved a great level of competence in their pursuit of perfection and became quite famous for their expertise in all aspects of wine making.

Medieval Knights Wines

Chivaleric orders such as the Knights Templars were organizations of warrior monks who were dominated medieval Europe. They gave Europe its banking system; they brought back knowledge of technologies such as irrigation they observed the Arab nations. They developed a force who were stronger than the Kings and ultimately were destroyed.

  • Mas Deu: Mas Déu was established as a Knight Templar Commanderie in 1137 on the site of a former roman villa. Thomas Jefferson also discovered these wonderful wines. In a letter to James Monroe he wrote that the wines from the Mas Deu vineyard were the best of the Roussillon wines. And now, six generations of wines are still being produced the Claude Oliver family, now featuring organic wines.
