As we get the soil in place, we also begin to fill in additional gravel, bringing it about 8" from the top of both the concrete footer and the bedding frames.

You can see that there's also flashing outside the foam insulation - 18" deep extending a few inches above the concrete - enough to fasten to the bottom sills, and to extend down into the soil to protect the insulation from major damage.
